When thinking about an investment for the future, the usual ideas would be property, pensions etc.  the demand for number plates has increased over the years but their availability diminish  An example of investment even as late as 2006.  The registration number 51NGH sold for over 250,000 in April 2006 this was the highest price realised for a registration. K1NGS sold for over 230,000.  There are other registration numbers which in the past have had a value and sold for a 6 figure sum.  If you decide to buy a vehicle registration as an investment the registration can be held on a certificate of entitlement on the basis of a £25 annual fee which retains the number in your possession, but if you decide to allocate the plate to your vehicle you have the benefit the unique plate you have chosen as well as any increase in value.

Thankfully not all registration marks are so expensive. Many start from as little as £79, plus a fee of £80 payable to the Department of Transport on all vehicle to vehicle transfers.
